Dr Francis Githae Muriithi is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist trained in both Kenya and the United Kingdom. He has ongoing interests in Global Women’s Health and Evidence-Based Health Care. He currently works as a Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham Women’s Hospital within the Global Maternal Health Research team. Dr Muriithi’s PhD project investigates strategies for improving maternal health outcomes and tackling preventable maternal deaths in sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr Muriithi’s background formation includes qualifying as a medical doctor (MBChB, Nairobi,2006), as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (MMed, Aga Khan East Africa , 2013), as a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology (MRCOG, RCOG UK, 2015). In addition, he possesses a teaching qualification (Professional Certificate in Supporting Learning, LSTM,2018). He was a Fellow in Evidence-Based Health Care (MSc, Oxford, 2018). His Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinical experience spans various countries, namely Kenya, Tanzania, Somaliland, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Dr Muriithi’s PhD project consists of 4 workstreams as follows understanding factors which contribute to preventable maternal deaths, exploration of the role of client and provider behaviours in tackling preventable maternal deaths, learning from maternal death review reports and identification of unique provider behaviours and practices that could be utilised in the design of a positive deviance strategy for tackling preventable maternal deaths.
The Ammalife Change Maker award supported Dr Muriithi in the conduct of fieldwork for the last workstream of his project at four hospital sites in Kenya. He is also involved in fundraising activities supporting Ammalife’s charity work in low-resource settings. In future, Dr Muriithi plans to continue contributing to saving mothers’ lives by way of improvement in teaching, practice, and research in low-resource settings.
