Ammalife is co-funding the team working to save the lives of mothers and their babies who develop sepsis in some of the poorest parts of our world. Thankfully, the UK has led the world in developing essential treatments and tests within the first hour after sepsis is suspected. (This care bundle is called the Sepsis 6 – 3 treatments + 3 tests) Time is critical and now, all over the world where there are well resourced clinics, deaths from sepsis have been halved.
Sadly this is rarely the case for mothers and newborns in most of sub-Saharan Africa. That’s why the team from the University of Birmingham/Birmingham Women’s Hospital are working closely with health professionals in Malawi to devise a package of treatments and tests which can be used in that first hour even when the pharmacy hasn’t got the drugs or there’s no lab for a blood test. They’re working to find practical, life saving solutions for low-income settings.
